I remember that I was at my primary school in Bristol when Daphne and Bee can in to visit.
We all sat in a circle in the hall and Bee was allowed to wander around to see us.
It’s a core memory I have, so obviously made a big impact on my childhood.
Thanks for taking the time to do that!
That’s wonderful!
Did the experience have any impact on your life decisions?
Someone said they decided to read Zoology at university as a result of Bee the Otter visiting their school.
Hello Sophie
Many thanks for your message about Daphne’s emotive request.
I believe I took the photograph in 1980 or 1981 and sent a copy to Daphne on 18th November 2022, together with another image taken on the same day. These were a follow-up to an earlier photograph I shared with your mum five months earlier, captured by Daphne on that visit to Baker’s Mill, of me with Bee on my shoulder. This is an image I have treasured and still have on display to this day.
Having seen some of the extensive media coverage that Daphne and Bee had obtained over the years I would not only be delighted but greatly honoured if she selected my photograph of them together when the world comes to celebrate her extraordinary years.
Please let her know our meeting shines bright in my memory and it remains one of the most magical days of my life.
Best wishes to you both.
Mike McLaren
Thanks so much for writing in.
May I keep your photo up on Daphne’s website – crediting you!
Was it ever published?
Mum loves this photo and has it on display at Bakers Mill. She has asked me to feature it on the service sheet for her funeral when the time comes. Is that OK with you?!
Do email me any photos of Bee that should accompany this one.
